The Displacement Hull, a long revered design concept, a throwback to the early days of surfing, always maintaining a place with the stylists and Outliers of the sport.
The Hull is a specific type of bottom contour that dramatically affects how the board rides on a wave. Displacement hulls, inspired by boat design, are distinct from planing hulls, which are more common in modern shortboards.
CJ Nelson and Ryan Engle have adapted the original design features to make them way more user friendly. With hull through the nose, blending to flat with edge in the tail and rail. No longer is the fin so far up the board, it is placed in an optimal position allowing drive, smooth arcs and maximum generated speed. The natural trim of a hull will often place you back in the power pocket of the wave when you take the foot off the gas, bringing a nice balance of racing the line, swoops and relaxed stance trim where you can just stand bolt up right and await the next section or cut back.
The Outlier in 7'6 and 8' are distinctly different from the 7' Outlier Plus.
Outlier from CJ Nelson Designs & Thunderbolt Surfboards
One of the most functional designs of the "shortboard revolution" (1967-68) re-worked by CJ and Ryan Engle. A true speed hull that puts feel and rider enjoyment first. Digging into the history books, referencing MP, Nat Young, and all of the transition-era sliders, we picked up where they left off and applied modern knowledge to make this functional beauty.
Outlier 7'6 and 8' shape on the left - 7'0 Outlier Plus on the right.
The 7'0 Outlier Plus has a wider tail, with lots of hidden volume and sidebites. We love this model, it offers buttery smooth cutbacks, down the line speed, and can surf the smallest of waves. With 57 Litres, perfect for Longboarders to change it up or shortboarders to feel the glide. It feels like something out of Morning of the Earth, and offers just that little amount of quirk ensuring feet movement and cross stepping for perfect trim.

The 7'6 and 8' Outlier
If you're looking for a one-board quiver to travel the world with, there's no better surfboard to fulfill your needs. With a slightly pulled in round tail compared to the 7'0 .. this board will surf anything you throw at it. Glide, carve and hold in hollow sections it can race, sit in the pocket and paddle through a line up with ease. Single fin and fun.
