An insight to a life on the road with Mango Team rider - Ishka Thres as he completes his final mission in Australia.
Last time we caught up, it was just after Cyclone Alfred. Autumn brought a few changes with it—the weather definitely shifted, with dusk setting in much earlier. The shoulder season also brought some rain, but that was short-lived. After a few weeks, it felt like the worst had passed, and we were rewarded with offshore mornings, clear blue water, and more groundswell filling into the beaches and points.
It’s currently whale season over here, and it’s been amazing seeing the whales breaching during nearly every surf as they head up the coast in search of warmer waters. It adds something pretty special to each session.
Recently, I finally ticked off a trip I’d been eyeing for a while. I managed to score some fun waves at a remote point two to three hours north of here. It's only accessible by 4WD and on the right tide, so we patiently waited for the conditions to line up just right. Myself and a few mates kept our eyes on the tides and swell. Eventually, we spotted a window and decided to send it.
We had no idea what to expect when we got there, so we packed boards for all conditions and hit the road before dawn, heading straight for the ferry. After that, it was about 50 kilometers of beach driving to get to where we surfed the first day. We brought everything with us—boards, food, water, and camping gear and spent the night posted up out there.
The spot delivered. It felt unreal to be out there, so remote and off the grid, scoring fun waves with just a couple friends. Definitely a trip I won't be forgetting anytime soon.
What's next?
I am heading home soon and preparing for a few WSL QS and Pro-junior events
coming up. I am competing in Boardmasters on the 8th August and looking forward to catching up with family, good friends and enjoying some time well
spent around home. I have my fingers crossed for some good swell and offshore winds.
